I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and divided my working life between Flagstaff and Chicago. I was a trial lawyer. My cases were mostly criminal cases, including first-chair in capital murder cases. We owned airplanes and used them to cover the considerable distances between courts in Arizona so my fictional lawyers will often keep aircraft.
My works are heavy in the interior lives of my characters because, even more than plot, my interest is in how characters react to change.
I have five grown daughters who’ve been very productive and awarded me with so many grandchildren I’ve lost count of them all.
I love writing these books. They are the kind of books I love to read, full of information about a wide spectrum of characters, lots of dialogue, and, as always, plenty of action and traps for the attorneys. The books represent the kind of learning experience I went through learning how to patty-cake as a new lawyer struggling to do the right thing for my clients.
I’ve sold over a million books and I’m usually ranked somewhere in the top 100 authors on Amazon. I am also a USA Today bestseller, an Amazon bestseller, and a Kindle All-Star every month.
